If you have a minimum annual income of $30,000, you qualify for an American Express Gold card with a 2% cash rebate reward program. This means that once a year, your American Express spendings are tallied and you are paid a cash rebate. You will only receive 2% if you have spent more than $5000. Spending $0 - $2,500 will result in a 0.5% rebate, and $2,500 - $5,000 in a rebate of 1%. There is no annual fee for this program, but this offer is not available online. You will need to call American Express directly at 1-800-268-2639 and ask for this program.
September 22 Interest Rates
You can't argue with the facts, a better interest rate is a better interest rate. Here's the lineup:

*On accounts containing more than $1000 (calculated daily, so you'll only lose a day of interest if your account drops below the threshold). Balances below $1000 collect 1.00% interest. Also, PC will raise your interest rate depending on how much you've kept in the account for how long. See PC's site for more details. ^If your balance is over $60,000, the portion over $60,000 will earn 3.75%.
Access Methods
As I mentioned before, one of the biggest differences between all these accounts are the different ways of accessing the money in your account. Try and find the accounts that charge the least for the methods you use regularly.
ATM
Being able to deposit or withdraw your money at an ATM is great, and is offered by most of these banks. Before you get too excited, know that most of these accounts have fees for that access. Also, some banks only offer ATM use in certain areas. The following is a summary of the different ATM networks that are mentioned, which banks offer access, and how much the fees are.
Interac Every ATM in Canada can access Interac, but only for withdrawals. Many of these are fee-intensive though, and there's every chance that you could end up paying up to $5 of fees for a $20 withdrawal. Where are all those fees going? The ATM operator takes a big chunk ("Convenience Fee"), the Interac people get their share (although Citizens and ING cover that), and sometimes your bank gets a piece as well. Here's the rundown (does not include the convenience fee, which varies according to ATM):

*There's a $1.00 discount on your first withdrawal of the month. If you're interested in knowing what to expect as far as convenience fee goes, check out this chart at the FCAC's great website. The ExchangeThis ATM network is a web of smaller banks across the country that have pooled together all their machines to offer to their customers national coverage rivalling one of the big banks. The deal is, any customer of a bank on the Exchange can use any other Exchange machine for free. To find the ATM nearest you, click here. The paticipating banks and their fees are:

Bank of Montreal You can transfer funds with another BMO account at any BMO ATM.
HSBC As well as being able to use any Exchange ATM, you can use any Bank of Montreal ATM.
ICICI ICICI offers free withdrawals and deposits at one of several ATMs in the GTA and Vancouver.
President's Choice Financial / CIBC You can transfer in between two PC Financial accounts at any of these ATMs but it will not allow you to transfer to another bank. This has to be done either through telephone or online banking. It takes one day to transfer your PC chequing account, or several days to an account with another bank.
Scotiabank Scotiabank allows transfers at their ATMs between two Scotiabank accounts for free. Also, withdrawals are allowed but at a steep $5.00 fee.
Bill Payment
Any business, utility, government, etc. that would mail you a bill will probably accept this form of payment. Once you set up specific bills, it's very simple to send a payment every month. This table shows which banks offer it, and how much they charge:

Surprisingly enough, E*Trade allows the use of Bill Payments for deposit into your savings account.
Cheque by mail
Doesn't leave much to the imagination. You mail them a cheque, to be made payable to yourself. This is only for deposits. Some banks offer envelopes that include postage for free. ING and American Express do for sure, I don't know about any of the others.

Automated Transfer
You can set up automated transfers so that a certain amount gets deposited into your account automatically in a certain time period (ie. every month). This is free with every account.
Online Transfer
If you won't be using your high interest savings account as your primary account, the online transfer is the holy grail of all access methods. All you have to do is mail the bank a void cheque from the other account, and voila! If you ever want to transfer between the two, just log on, choose how much, and submit!
This service is offered for free by every bank listed except Outlook and Achieva. At BMO, transfers cost $0.85 unless the money is being transferred to another BMO account.
Phone Transfer
Similar to online transfers but more time-consuming, phone transfers can either be automated or with an actual person.

Signup Bonuses
In the long term, signup bonuses don't really mean anything. They can, however, make it easier to choose between two banks that may be very similar. Here are the bonuses offered by each bank.
| Bank
| Bonus
|
| Achieva
| One Free Chequebook (25 cheques): In an age where 50 cheques can easily cost more than $25, this is a welcome discount. You shouldn't be surprised that using these cheques will run you $1 each, so in the end, that chequebook could end up costing you $25 anyway.
|
| Outlook
|
| Amex
| $10 with a minimum deposit of $200.
|
| ICICI
| $20 for you and for every person you refer that deposits $100, up to a maximum of $500.
|
| ING Direct
| A referral scheme whereby if you tell someone about ING, you get $13 and they get $13. |
Conclusions
ICICI Sets the benchmark for an online bank. Unrivalled interest, combined with a plethora of free access methods. For those needing to transfer money back and forth from India, this may also be a great option.
E*Trade An outstanding interest rate, but weak on access methods. Especially convenient for those who happen to use E*Trade's other services.
PC Financial Interest Plus Note: This blurb was written before ICICI went and blew everyone out of the water. The question on everyone's mind: will PC raise their rates to keep in line? PC Financial seems to be out for world domination. This new quasi-GIC is a perfect complement to their bar-raising no-fee chequing account. As long as you have at least $1000 to invest, you'll get a competitive rate and loads more flexibility than Achieva or Outlook. There are, of course, no fees to move your money into any other bank account. If your balance drops below $1000, don't despair; you'll only lose interest on those days that the balance is low. If it's going to be low for more than a day, you can instantly transfer the entire balance over to an Interest First account for however long you need to. PC will even raise your interest rate depending on how long and how much you keep money in your account! This account is a winner, especially if you have a chequing account with PC.
Achieva & Outlook Currently, ICICI has entirely eliminated these banks' one advantage: interest rate. This could be a temporary situation, but even if it wasn't, Outlook & Achieva's high interest rates are moderated by awkward and pricey access methods.
Manulife ICICI's interest is usually higher, and it's more feature-rich.
Altamira / Canadian Tire Similar to the E*Trade account, but with less interest.
Citizens Ultimate A good well rounded account with a fair amount of access methods, with the notable absence of Interac Direct Payment. A notable plus for the globetrotter is the four free transactions ANYWHERE in the world! Also, Citizens is by far the most ethical choice of the bunch, with the goal of going carbon neutral by 2010.
HSBC HSBC improved their offering considerably when they introduced the Direct Savings Account. Unlimited Interac Direct Payments, bill payments & free access to BMO and The Exchange ATMs means you could almost use this as your primary account. Unless you use actual cheques. Similar to Citizens Ultimate, but has unlimited ATM interactions and includes Interac Direct Payments.
ING Direct There are many accounts here that offer better interest. If you were to choose ING for the 4 free ATM transactions, Citizens' Ultimate Account and HSBC offers the same thing, but with more features. ING Direct just turns out to be all hype and nothing attractive. ING seems to put most of their money into paying for advertising instead of features or interest. Pass.
PC Financial Interest First/ BMO/ Scotiabank/Royal Bank You could say these accounts are only in here for pity. They offer little interest, and very few ways to access it. They are useful for people that hold their primary bank account with one of these banks. Transfers are fast and easy to set up. In the case of Scotiabank, they're also instant. If you're looking for any substantial interest though, these are out of the running.
Citizens Investment Wow. Free unlimited cheques. If that makes up for more than a one percent interest gap, this may be the account for you. Also, note that Citizens has a strong ethical policy. If you're thinking about replacing your chequing account, you might want to check out Ubiquity Bank.
Amex Amex is a waste of your time. 'Nuff said.
Suggestions
The Investor: I may write the occasional cheque, but otherwise, I leave my money untouched.
ICICI.
The Online Banker: I don't use my high interest savings account much, but when I do, I want to have my money transferred to my main bank account quickly and easily, over the internet.
ICICI takes two for two. Most of the banks in the list are what you're looking for, but ICICI has the highest rate of interest out of all of them.
The Chequing Account Replacer: Frequent access and high interest - Why not have both?
HSBC would be a good choice if you can go without cheques. If not, check out Citizens Investment, or, if you can keep a minimum $1000 balance, Ubiquity Bank is a stunning chequing account.

Graphs - Cash Rebate CardsJust to help with the decision process, I've decided to make graphs for the cards that offer cash. Thanks to Carl Bercier for pointing out that the Ultramar tiers apply to all yearly spending (for example: if you spend $5999, you get 0.75% of $5999, if you spend $6001, you get 1.25% of $6001.

。。。旁边一哥们还说 i like rockmelon =。
